Nicholas Hynes was born in Gosford, New South Wales, Australia, and is of Indigenous Australian and Scottish descent. Growing up on the Central Coast, he attended Brisbane Water Secondary College and played junior rugby league for the Umina Beach Bunnies and Woy Woy Roosters before joining the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles' NRL Under-20s team in 2015.

Hynes began his professional career with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles before moving to the Mackay Cutters, where he played 42 matches in the Queensland Cup. His breakthrough came when he signed with the Melbourne Storm in 2019, where he quickly established himself, culminating in a premiership win in 2020 and a growing reputation as a versatile player.
