Thierry Henry Defends His Ballon d'Or Hosting After Controversial Jokes

Thierry Henry has hit back at critics of his hosting performance at Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony, dismissing the backlash as people "getting really excited about nothing". The Arsenal and France legend addressed the controversy directly in a social media video on Wednesday, defending his on-stage interactions with Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and his CBS Sports colleague Kate Scott.

Henry faced criticism for a joke directed at Lamine Yamal after the 19-year-old won his third consecutive Kopa Trophy for the best young player. On stage, Henry asked Yamal, "It's your third one, right? But is it the one you really wanted to win?" The remark, referencing Yamal's status as a Ballon d'Or contender, drew an audible reaction from the audience. In his response video, Henry insisted he was not trying to check the teenager's ego. "I'm a big fan of Lamine Yamal," Henry said. "I wasn't checking his ego at all. That you didn't like the joke, I can understand. But don't do that, he's one of the players I'd pay to watch, I love him."

Further scrutiny came when Henry appeared to correct co-host Kate Scott's pronunciation of Brazilian legend Socrates' name. Scott had pronounced it like the Greek philosopher, and Henry interjected with the correct Portuguese pronunciation. Critics labelled the moment as disrespectful. Henry was emphatic in his defence, stating that the moment was a planned bit. "Please stop saying I disrespected Kate," Henry said. "I will never do that and you can ask her, she was on the joke with me. She did Soc on purpose, and I said Soc, so please stop inventing stories." He clarified that the entire segment was a mutual understanding between the two presenters.

During the ceremony, Henry also openly admitted he wanted his compatriot Kylian Mbappe to beat eventual winner Harry Kane to the main prize. This frank admission of bias, while not a major point of controversy, added to the perception of an unscripted and opinionated hosting style. Henry's overall defence centred on the idea that his comments were light-hearted and not intended to cause offence, framing the online reaction as an overstatement.

While not a point of current news, Henry's history with the award provides context for his role as host. The French striker finished as a runner-up in the Ballon d'Or voting twice, in 2003 and 2004. He never clinched the top prize, a fact that adds a layer of personal experience to his commentary on the aspirations of players like Lamine Yamal. His closest finish was behind Pavel Nedved and then Ronaldinho in those respective years.
