Wayde van Niekerk was born in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, to parents Wayne van Niekerk and Odessa Swarts, who was also a sprinter. He faced health challenges early in life, being born prematurely and requiring a blood transfusion. Van Niekerk attended Bellville Primary and Simonberg Primary before relocating to Bloemfontein in 2005, where he continued his education at Grey College and later studied marketing at the University of the Free State.

Van Niekerk's athletic career began to flourish in 2010 when he made his international debut at the World Junior Championships, finishing fourth in the 200 m. His breakthrough came in 2015 when he won the gold medal in the 400 m at the World Championships in Beijing, establishing himself as a top contender in sprinting. His performances continued to improve, leading to a historic Olympic win in 2016.
