Tony Ferguson was born in Oxnard, California, and raised primarily in Muskegon, Michigan. He excelled in multiple sports during high school, particularly wrestling, where he was a three-time All-State selection. After high school, Ferguson attended Central Michigan University and later Grand Valley State University, where he won the 2006 NCWA national wrestling championship.

Ferguson's professional MMA career began in 2008, but he gained significant recognition after winning season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2011.
