Shakur Stevenson was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. Named after the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, he began boxing at the age of five under the guidance of his grandfather, Wali Moses, who owned a local boxing gym. Growing up, Stevenson idolized Andre Ward, which inspired his journey into the sport.

Stevenson's amateur career was remarkable, culminating in a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the bantamweight division. He turned professional in 2017 and quickly made a name for himself, winning the WBO featherweight title in 2019, marking him as the first male Team USA boxer from the 2016 Olympics to achieve this feat.

Stevenson is known for his southpaw stance, exceptional defensive skills, and agility in the ring. His ability to control distance and deliver precise punches has earned him a reputation as one of the most technically proficient boxers in his weight classes.
