Matthew Tkachuk was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, to former NHL player Keith Tkachuk and Chantal Oster. Raised in Creve Coeur, Missouri, he spent his formative years in hockey rinks, often accompanying his father to practices. Tkachuk attended Chaminade College Preparatory School and the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, where he honed his skills and developed a passion for the sport.

Tkachuk was drafted 6th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft after a standout junior career with the London Knights.
