Mary Lou Retton was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, where she began training in gymnastics at a young age. Inspired by Nadia Comăneci's performance at the 1976 Olympics, Retton's family relocated to Houston, Texas, to train under the renowned coaches Béla and Márta Károlyi, who had previously coached Comăneci.

Retton gained national attention in the early 1980s, winning the American Cup in 1983 and 1984. Her remarkable performances at the U.S. Nationals and Olympic Trials set the stage for her historic participation in the 1984 Summer Olympics, where she would become a household name.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Retton won the gold medal in the all-around competition, becoming the first American woman to achieve this feat. She also secured two silver medals and two bronze medals, making her one of the most decorated gymnasts of the Games.

Retton's success in gymnastics not only elevated the sport in the United States but also inspired a generation of female athletes. Her victory in 1984 marked a significant moment in Olympic history, paving the way for future American gymnasts to achieve similar success on the world stage.
