Kelvin Kiptum was born on December 2, 1999, in Chepsamo village, located in the high-altitude region of Kenya's Rift Valley. Growing up in a family of herders, he began training as a runner at the age of 13, inspired by local athletes. His early experiences in the rugged terrain of Elgeyo-Marakwet County shaped his future as a long-distance runner.

Kiptum's ascent in marathon running began with his impressive debut at the 2022 Valencia Marathon, where he finished with a time of 2:01:53, marking the fastest-ever marathon debut. His subsequent performances, including a second-place finish at the 2023 London Marathon, solidified his status as a top contender in the sport, culminating in his world record-breaking run at the 2023 Chicago Marathon.
