Irad Ortiz Jr. was born in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, into a family with a rich equestrian background. Inspired by his grandfather and uncle, both of whom were jockeys, Ortiz pursued his passion for horse racing from a young age. At 16, he enrolled in Puerto Rico's Escuela Vocacional Hípica, a school dedicated to training aspiring jockeys.

Ortiz began his professional career at Hipódromo Camarero in Puerto Rico, quickly making a name for himself with impressive early wins. He moved to New York in 2012, where he gained significant recognition, winning his first major race at the Coaching Club American Oaks in 2012. His consistent performance led him to become one of the top jockeys in North America.

Ortiz is known for his tactical riding style and ability to read races effectively. His strong communication with trainers and horses allows him to execute strategies that often lead to victory.
