Ilia Topuria was born in Halle, Germany, to Georgian parents who were refugees from Abkhazia. At the age of seven, he moved to Georgia, where he began practicing Greco-Roman wrestling. After the Russo-Georgian War, his family relocated to Alicante, Spain, when he was 15, where he started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Topuria began his professional MMA career in 2015, quickly making a name for himself in local Spanish organizations. He won the vacant MFE Featherweight title and later competed internationally in Cage Warriors and Brave Combat Federation. In 2020, he signed with the UFC, where he won his first six fights, leading to a title shot.
