Xavi Takes Charge of Netherlands, Vows to Restore Attacking

Xavi Hernández is the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, tasked with reviving the Oranje's fortunes and identity after a disappointing World Cup exit. The former Barcelona midfielder and manager was officially appointed on August 12, 2026, signing a contract through to the 2030 World Cup. He replaces Ronald Koeman, who stepped down following the team's early elimination in the Round of 32 by Morocco on penalties.

Xavi's mandate is clear. He must make the Netherlands look and feel like the Netherlands again. At his first press conference on August 25, he stated his intention to bring back the attacking, possession-dominant football the nation is famous for. "If we play good football... Taking the initiative, dominating the game, playing in an offensive way... We will be closer to winning," Xavi told reporters. He insisted the goals of attractive play and positive results are not mutually exclusive. "We are here to compete, we are here to enjoy and we are here to win. I insist, we are here to win." His appointment makes him the first foreign boss of the Oranje in 48 years.

The new manager received a powerful endorsement from a key figure in his past. Louis van Gaal, the veteran Dutch coach who gave Xavi his senior debut for Barcelona in a 1998 Spanish Super Cup match, sent a surprise video message. Van Gaal warmly welcomed his former player to the role, praising his incredible tactical intelligence and pinpoint passing. "You must remember it. Unfortunately we lost 2-1, but you scored that only goal. That says something about you, Xavi," Van Gaal said, recalling that debut. A visibly moved Xavi expressed profound gratitude for the gesture and the coach's early faith in him.

One of Xavi's most pressing immediate tasks is managing the future of his captain and defensive leader. Virgil van Dijk has not yet committed to continuing his international career under the new regime. The 35-year-old defender plans to hold direct talks with Xavi before making a final decision on his Netherlands future. This conversation will be essential for Xavi as he builds his squad and leadership group. Losing a player of Van Dijk's experience and stature so early in his tenure would be a significant blow.

The philosophical connection is strong, but the practical challenges are immense. Xavi must reconnect a talented squad with the traditional Dutch football identity championed by legends like Johan Cruyff. He inherits a team that, despite topping its World Cup group and scoring ten goals in the opening stage, fell apart when it mattered most. The penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the Round of 32 highlighted a recurring issue of tournament fragility. Xavi's job is to prove that an attacking, proactive philosophy can still deliver trophies at the highest level, something the Netherlands have not achieved since 1988.
