Thierry Henry's 2006 Bernabeu Strike Remembered as Arsenal's Defining Moment

Thierry Henry scored the only goal as Arsenal beat Real Madrid 1-0 at the Bernabeu on 21 February 2006.

How Henry's strike changed Arsenal's European trajectory

That goal made Arsenal the first English team to win at the Santiago Bernabeu. It came during a transitional season after the Invincibles era. Defensive injuries and inconsistent form had plagued Wenger's side. Yet Henry's bold display silenced the home crowd and ignited a run that took Arsenal to the Champions League final. They pushed Barcelona to the limit before losing 2-1 in Paris.

Why this match still resonates with fans today

Arsenal had rarely impacted Europe's elite competition before 2006. Their best prior runs ended in the quarter-finals against Valencia in 2001 and Chelsea in 2004. Madrid were nine-time European champions at the time. Henry's performance against such odds became a defining moment for Wenger's project. The result is still cited as proof of Arsenal's ability to overcome giants.

How Henry's legacy is being honoured in 2026

Tributes to Thierry Henry have increased ahead of the 20-year anniversary of the Bernabeu win. Former teammates and pundits regularly reference the goal when discussing his impact. Clubs and fans share clips of the strike on social media. Henry's role as a mentor to young forwards at France and MLS levels keeps his name current.
