Sean O'Malley Demands Title Rematch as New Contender Emerges

2026-10-29 · Sean O'Malley · Player Focus

Sean O'Malley is making his case to be the next man to challenge UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan. The former champion's campaign for a title rematch is the central storyline in the division, amplified by a new callout from a surging contender and public backing from a prominent voice in the sport.

O'Malley positions himself as Yan's toughest test

O'Malley believes he is the most difficult stylistic puzzle for the reigning champion. His argument gained steam after Yan successfully defended his title against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 333 on October 24. O'Malley was vocal about his displeasure when broadcaster Daniel Cormier mentioned Song Yadong, not him, as a potential next challenger during the event's post-fight interview. He insists the Yan fight is the biggest available for the promotion and the one fans want to see.

Helwani and White weigh the title picture

Broadcaster Ariel Helwani publicly backed O'Malley's claim. In a post-event analysis, Helwani called a Yan versus O'Malley rematch "a tremendous fight" and the logical next step. UFC President Dana White confirmed the choice is between two fighters. "Me and the matchmakers were texting the entire night about Song Yadong and O'Malley," White said at the UFC 333 press conference. He described both as strong options but did not name a final decision, leaving the door open for O'Malley's lobbying efforts to pay off.

Payton Talbott calls his shot at 'Suga'

A new threat to O'Malley's plans emerged from UFC 332 on October 3. Rising star Payton Talbott scored a spectacular first-round knockout of former champion Deiveson Figueiredo, stopping the fight at 2:09 of the opening round. It was his second consecutive win over a former titleholder, following a December 2025 victory over Henry Cejudo. Immediately after the win, the 28-year-old directly called out O'Malley, telling him, "You can't run forever."

O'Malley's condition for fighting Talbott

O'Malley has responded to Talbott's callout, but with a major caveat. In an October 6 interview, O'Malley stated he is willing to fight Talbott. However, he admitted he would "duck" that matchup under one specific condition: if a title opportunity against Petr Yan materializes. His priority remains clear. O'Malley wants another shot at the gold, and a potential fight with Talbott would only happen if the championship path is blocked.
