Sean O'Malley attacks 'drunk cowboy' fan while cornering
Sean O'Malley took direct action against a heckling fan while cornering teammate Tommy McMillen at Noche UFC 4 last Saturday. The former UFC bantamweight champion threw his hat at a fan who was hurling insults during McMillen's walkout to the Octagon in Glendale.
O'Malley was in the corner for featherweight Tommy McMillen's fight at the September 12 event. As McMillen and his team stood in the walkway, a heavily intoxicated fan spent roughly two minutes shouting obscenities at the fighter. O'Malley described the fan as a "drunk cowboy guy" who repeatedly yelled "F- you Tommy! You f-- p--!"
He decided he had heard enough. O'Malley balled up his hat and, as the team walked out, "smoked that m--f-- right in the face with it." He later admitted part of him felt bad, but he had told coach Tim Welch he was going to "smoke this m----." The incident was captured on video and shared widely on social media.
Sean O'Malley has become a significant influence for the rising UFC featherweight. He cornered McMillen alongside coach Tim Welch for his bout against Marwan Rahiki at Noche UFC 4. McMillen won that fight by unanimous decision in a performance many considered a 'Fight of the Year' contender.
His latest victory continues a meteoric rise that has him marching closer to the featherweight Top 15 rankings.
O'Malley is not the first UFC athlete to push back against trash-talking fans during the intense pre-fight atmosphere. The walkout is a highly charged moment where fighters are mentally preparing for combat, and interactions with the crowd can sometimes turn confrontational. O'Malley's method of retaliation, however, was uniquely physical, using his hat as a projectile to silence the abuse aimed at his teammate.
