Roman Reigns' Mainstream Appeal Questioned Amid Part-Time

2026-09-17 · Roman Reigns · Player Focus

Roman Reigns' status as WWE's top star is under a dual spotlight, facing questions about his mainstream appeal while his part-time schedule as World Heavyweight Champion persists. The Tribal Chief recently defended his title in Mexico City but is not advertised for the next two episodes of Raw, fueling ongoing debate about his role as the company's leading figure.

Former WWE star MVP has sparked discussion by comparing Reigns' fame to legendary figures like John Cena and The Rock. Speaking on his Marking Out podcast, MVP argued that while Reigns is a massive draw within wrestling, his recognition outside the industry may not match that of past icons.

MVP offered a simple test. He suggested that if you asked ten people on the street, six or seven would know John Cena, The Rock, or Hulk Hogan. He is not convinced Roman Reigns would get the same response. This perception highlights a gap between being a wrestling megastar and a true household name.

But MVP was quick to defend Reigns' undeniable impact on WWE's business. He pushed back hard against claims Reigns is an "industry plant," a label used by some critics. MVP pointed to concrete metrics like merchandise and ticket sales as proof of his value.

"If you do a show in some location and Roman Reigns is not on the card and you sell 20,000 tickets, if you add 'Roman Reigns will be' you're going to sell another 5,000 tickets," MVP said. This 25% potential boost shows his box-office power for the company, even if his face isn't on a cereal box.

The debate over Reigns' star power is amplified by his continued selective appearances. After successfully defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Penta on the September 15 Raw in Mexico City, Reigns is absent from WWE's advertised lineups.

He is not scheduled for the September 22 Raw in San Antonio or the September 28 show in Milwaukee. His next advertised appearance is on the October 5 go-home edition of Raw in St. Louis, just before the Money in the Bank premium live event. This fuels complaints from fans and critics about a part-time champion holding the top title.

The numbers tell a stark story. Despite being more active in 2026 with appearances, Reigns has wrestled in only six matches this entire year. He won the 2026 Royal Rumble and then defeated CM Punk at WrestleMania 42 to claim the World Heavyweight Championship, but his in-ring activity remains carefully managed.

Reigns' immediate future is set. The attack by LA Knight on the September 15 Raw has cemented their rivalry. The two are now scheduled to clash for the World Heavyweight Title at the Money in the Bank event in three weeks. This marquee matchup will be a major test for both men.

WWE has time to build more tension between the champion and the challenger before the event. Reigns' advertised return on the October 5 go-home show will likely be the final major chapter in that story. For now, the champion operates on his own timeline, a reality that continues to define his historic reign and the conversations surrounding it.

  • MVP questions mainstream recognition, suggesting Roman Reigns lacks the crossover fame of John Cena or The Rock.
  • Reigns is absent from the next two Raws, not advertised for shows in San Antonio (Sep 22) or Milwaukee (Sep 28).
  • The champion has wrestled only six times in 2026, a stat that highlights his part-time schedule despite holding the top title.
  • A title defense against LA Knight is set for the upcoming Money in the Bank premium live event.
