Richard Petty Rallies for Trump and Weighs In on NASCAR's Championship Equation

2026-10-22 · Richard Petty · Player Focus

NASCAR icon Richard Petty has stepped firmly into the political spotlight, campaigning for President Donald Trump at a rally in Greenville, North Carolina, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The 89 year old Hall of Famer praised Trump as the "best driver we've ever had" and urged supporters to get to the polls to pick the "best pit crew." His appearance capped a week where his long standing feud with fellow former driver Danica Patrick was set aside for a shared political cause.

Petty's Political Endorsement Takes Center Stage

Petty's speech at the Pitt Greenville Airport rally was a full throated endorsement. He used his racing fame to draw a direct analogy between political and motorsport success. "Let's get out and pick the very best pit crew we can for the very best driver in the world," Petty told the crowd. His appearance followed Danica Patrick's own campaign stop with Trump in Park City, Kansas, on Monday, October 19. Patrick had flown aboard Air Force One to that event, and while it's unclear if Petty did the same for his North Carolina trip, their consecutive nights of support highlighted a unified front from two of the sport's most recognizable names.

Away from the campaign trail, Petty offered a blunt assessment of a driver's contribution to a championship, drawing from his seven Cup titles as a driver and decades as a team owner. On his family's podcast, he argued that the driver gets too much credit. "The driver always gets credit for winning a championship, but to me, he's just a big part of winning a championship, but he's probably not even half of what it takes," Petty said. He pointed to the struggles of elite talents like Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson in subpar equipment as proof that the car and team are the larger factors in success.

A Veteran's Name Becomes a Benchmark for Poor Racing

Petty's legendary status was invoked in a very different context during criticism of the ARCA Menards Series. After a recent race at Bristol where only nine cars finished on the lead lap, veteran spotter Freddie Kraft blasted the field's lack of competitiveness on the Door Bumper Clear podcast. "It literally looks like the Richard Petty driving experience with ten cars out there," Kraft said, referencing a bygone era of extreme dominance. He called for enforced minimum speeds, citing the example of a top five points driver finishing 21 laps down.
