Richard Petty Demands More Competition After Legacy Motor

Richard Petty has delivered a pointed assessment of Legacy Motor Club's driver lineup, explaining the team's recent shocking decision to replace John Hunter Nemechek with Josh Berry. The NASCAR icon and team ambassador said the organization must find drivers who can truly compete with each other to improve.

Legacy Motor Club is preparing for the 2027 NASCAR season with significant changes. The team is expanding from two cars to three, securing a third charter. As part of this overhaul, they made the surprising move to fire John Hunter Nemechek despite a recent contract renewal. He will be replaced in the No. 42 car by Josh Berry.

Team co-owner Jimmie Johnson viewed the change as necessary for the organization's progress. The move sets the stage for a new dynamic within the garage, aiming to inject a higher level of internal competition that Petty believes is currently missing.

When asked about Josh Berry's addition to the lineup, Richard Petty offered a measured but telling six-word critique of the team's existing situation. "Right now we've not got that," Petty said, referring to a roster of drivers who push each other to be better. He elaborated that for Legacy Motor Club to move forward, they need drivers who are competitive and can race with each other to build improvement.

Petty's comments highlight a perceived lack of a productive rivalry between current driver Erik Jones, a two-time Southern 500 winner, and the now-departed Nemechek. That internal pressure, Petty suggests, is what drives teams to consistently fight for top-five finishes and victories.

Josh Berry brings a recent surge of performance to the Legacy Motor Club stable. He won his first Cup Series race last year with Wood Brothers Racing at Las Vegas. More recently, Berry strung together an impressive run of six consecutive top-10 finishes from the Brickyard 400 to the Southern 500, a first for the historic Wood Brothers team.

His consistent results demonstrate the kind of form Legacy is seeking. The team is looking to emulate the competitive environment seen at squads like 23XI Racing, where Tyler Reddick's five wins this season and Corey Heim's two Cup wins in a limited schedule create a culture of high expectation.

Berry's arrival is meant to apply that same pressure to teammate Erik Jones, creating the inter-team rivalry Petty identified as missing. The goal is clear: translate individual consistency into team-wide performance gains that lead to more checkered flags.
