Naoya Inoue vs Bam Rodriguez Talks Progress for March 2027 Tokyo Superfight

2026-10-29 · Naoya Inoue · Player Focus

Negotiations for a superfight between Naoya Inoue and Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez are moving forward, with a target date of March 2027 in Tokyo. Inoue's promoter, Hideyuki Ohashi, confirmed the talks are progressing well, putting the blockbuster clash between two of boxing's pound-for-pound elites back on track after recent uncertainty.

Talks had appeared to stall when Inoue publicly expressed frustration over delays, suggesting he might move up in weight. Rodriguez's trainer, Robert Garcia, had initially wanted his fighter to take another bout at bantamweight first. Inoue's team rejected that outright, demanding Rodriguez skip an interim fight and meet him directly in March or lose the opportunity. Garcia and promoter Eddie Hearn have since accepted those terms and are awaiting a formal offer. Ohashi clarified the process, stating, "These discussions are happening at the promoter level, not with the trainer," in response to Garcia's public call for a contract.

Inoue's impatience has opened the door to a compelling alternative. The undisputed super-bantamweight champion has teased a move to the 126-pound featherweight division. If he chooses that path immediately, a world title shot awaits. WBC featherweight champion Bruce Carrington has publicly stated he would "love to fight Inoue," offering the Japanese star a chance to become a five-division world champion. This option presents a clear pivot if the Rodriguez negotiations ultimately fail, adding pressure to finalize the March deal.

The plan remains for Inoue to return to the ring in the first quarter of 2027. He has not fought since May of this year, when he retained his undisputed 122-pound crown with a unanimous decision victory over Junto Nakatani. His team has ruled out an April or May bout, focusing squarely on February or March. Rodriguez, who became a three-division champion by winning the WBA bantamweight title in June, is the likeliest opponent, but the Carrington offer is a viable Plan B.

Inoue's May win over Nakatani was a masterclass that answered previous questions. Following his dominant eighth-round stoppage of Stephen Fulton in 2023, some had questioned his glove-wrapping. The tactical adjustments and blistering speed displayed against the highly skilled Nakatani, however, cemented the victory as arguably a career-best performance. It demonstrated his ability to outthink and outfight elite competition at the highest level, shutting down any lingering doubts.
