Naoya Inoue hints at Jesse Bam Rodriguez super fight amid deadline talks

Naoya Inoue has set a strict deadline for a potential super fight with Jesse Bam Rodriguez, stating he will not wait past March 2027. The Japanese unified champion made his seventh successful defence of his undisputed crown in May, unanimously outpointing Junto Nakatani in their all-Japanese encounter. Meanwhile, Rodriguez made his bantamweight debut in June, becoming a three-division world champion by dethroning WBA champion Antonio Vargas with a sixth-round finish.

Robert Garcia, trainer and manager of Jesse Bam Rodriguez, has expressed annoyance at a lack of communication from Team Inoue. Garcia told Ring Magazine that he and Bam have no problem with the deadline, but nobody from Inoue's team has approached him directly. Garcia named WBO bantamweight champion Christian Medina as the ideal opponent for Rodriguez in November, before potentially moving toward the Inoue showdown.

Inoue recently stated he will not hang around at 122lbs waiting for Bam, and will move on if the fight does not happen in Q1 of 2027. The pound-for-pound king continues to dominate the super-bantamweight division, while Rodriguez eyes further progression after his bantamweight breakthrough.

The super-fight remains a tantalising prospect for 2027, with both athletes targeting undisputed greatness across divisions. Inoue's team faces pressure to open dialogue, while Rodriguez looks to build momentum with one more fight at 118lbs before potentially moving up to featherweight to face the unified champion.
