Michael Chandler Vows to Fight On After Fourth Straight UFC

2026-09-28 · Michael Chandler · Player Focus

Michael Chandler is defiantly pushing back against calls to retire, insisting his fighting career continues despite a fourth consecutive UFC loss. The 40-year-old veteran was stopped in the first round by Mauricio Ruffy at UFC Freedom 250 in June, extending a difficult skid that has seen him go 0-4 in the promotion. Chandler, however, remains adamant that he still has something to give inside the octagon.

Chandler dismisses retirement talk

Facing public suggestions to hang up his gloves from fellow fighters like Dustin Poirier and Arman Tsarukyan, Chandler has made his position clear. He spoke about his future on The Ariel Helwani Show. "I got bested, and that's just the simple fact of the matter," Chandler said. "Life goes on. We shoot our shot." He acknowledged the physical toll, admitting, "You'd be silly not to worry about it a little bit," regarding the damage from recent knockout losses. But he quickly pivoted to his resolve. "This road is not over yet. This train's still got steam in it, so we're just going to keep on going." Chandler pointed to his life outside the cage as a source of strength, calling himself a "very, very wealthy man" with a beautiful family.

The man who beat him: Mauricio Ruffy's rise

Chandler's most recent conqueror, Mauricio Ruffy, is now positioned for a major opportunity. After defeating Chandler, Ruffy is reportedly in line for a title shot. Chandler himself has praised Ruffy's abilities, suggesting the Brazilian is "better than a lot of people think." In a separate interview, Ruffy discussed his own preparations, claiming he had Arman Tsarukyan "hurt and ready to go" during a recent training session ahead of UFC 331. This context shows the level of competition Chandler is facing, with the new generation making a significant impact in the lightweight division.

The enduring McGregor dream

Even amid his current struggles, one major goal still burns brightly for Michael Chandler: a fight with Conor McGregor. The bout was famously booked after their stint as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter but never materialized due to an injury suffered by McGregor. Chandler spent two years of his prime waiting for that fight, a delay contributed to his current slide. Now, he is openly reigniting interest. "Why shouldn't it be me?" Chandler asked rhetorically. He framed the fight as one that still makes sense for McGregor to erase the "stain" of pulling out of their scheduled contest. Chandler's pursuit of this lucrative and high-profile matchup remains a central storyline in the latter stages of his career.

A career at a crossroads

Michael Chandler's current record tells the story of a tough transition. Since joining the UFC in 2021 with championship ambitions, his results have not matched his ferocious fighting style. He has been finished in three of his last four fights, all losses. At 40 years old, the questions about his longevity and health are louder than ever. Yet, his financial security and personal fulfillment outside the sport give him a unique perspective. He is not fighting out of necessity but out of desire. This allows him to continue on his own terms, chasing the biggest fights available, even as his title window appears closed.
