Lionel Messi Prepares For Final Argentina Match With Special

Lionel Messi will play his final match for Argentina on October 6 in a sold-out farewell at Buenos Aires's Monumental Stadium. The 39-year-old icon will wear a unique, specially designed Adidas jersey for the friendly against Benin.

The entire event has been orchestrated as a grand send-off for the nation's greatest player. All 85,000 tickets were snapped up within two hours of going on sale, guaranteeing an emotional atmosphere. Head coach Lionel Scaloni admitted he played a part in convincing Messi to return for this final home appearance after the player's initial retirement announcement in late August. "It will be hard not to cry that day, it's a privilege to be there," Scaloni said. The coach described the efforts to arrange the match, stating they "did everything possible" to give Messi and the fans this moment.

Adidas has created a bespoke sky blue and white striped kit loaded with symbolic details. It features regal gold accents and the prominent "Sun of May" emblem taken directly from the Argentine flag. Messi himself teased the design on Instagram with a short video and the caption, "One last match. A jersey for a lifetime." The jersey serves as a physical tribute to his phenomenal two-decade contribution to the national team.

Scaloni has officially confirmed that defender Cristian Romero will inherit the captain's armband. The 28-year-old Atletico Madrid centre-back, nicknamed 'Cuti', was already the team's third captain behind Messi and the retired Nicolás Otamendi. "The captain is going to be Cuti," Scaloni stated, acknowledging other leaders like Emiliano Martínez and Lautaro Martínez could also wear it but that Romero is "the right one." Romero has previous captaincy experience, including in World Cup qualifiers and preparatory matches.

His time with the Albiceleste was crowned by an incredible three-year period from 2021 to 2024. Messi finally lifted the World Cup in 2022 after a storied campaign in Qatar, a triumph that cemented his legacy. He added two Copa América victories to that, ending Argentina's long wait for major silverware and fulfilling his destiny as the nation's footballing saviour. His decision to step away was influenced by the passing of his father, a guiding figure throughout his life.
