Kylian Mbappé Eyes Ballon d'Or as El Clasico Showdown with Yamal Looms

2026-10-25 · Kylian Mbappé · Player Focus

Kylian Mbappé is at the center of the football world this week, with the Real Madrid star a frontrunner for the 2026 Ballon d'Or award just days before a monumental El Clasico showdown against Barcelona.

Real Madrid's camp is reportedly growing optimistic about Mbappé's chances of claiming football's most prestigious individual prize. The ceremony is set for Monday, October 30, in London. While Barcelona's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Bayern Munich's Harry Kane are also considered strong contenders, confidence is high within the Madrid hierarchy that their marquee forward can secure the win. This would cap a remarkable first full season in Spain for the French captain, solidifying his status as a global icon.

All focus then shifts to the pitch for Sunday's El Clasico at Camp Nou. The match is framed as a direct battle between Mbappé and his Ballon d'Or rival, Barcelona's Lamine Yamal. It also marks the return of Jose Mourinho for his second spell as Real Madrid manager, reigniting one of football's fiercest managerial rivalries. For Madridistas, a victory would deliver bragging rights and a significant psychological blow in the early title race, with Mbappé expected to lead the line.

Away from the intense pressure of La Liga, Mbappé recently showed his athletic versatility in a light-hearted crossover. He was visited at France's Clairefontaine training base by Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson. Robinson brought NFL gear, and Mbappé suited up in a Falcons jersey, shoulder pads, and a helmet. When asked which position he'd play, the speedster didn't hesitate. "If I played football, I would be the guy who runs and catches the ball," Mbappé said, identifying himself as a wide receiver. He then successfully caught a pass from Robinson on a post route, even juggling the American football in full pads.

Mbappé's arrival and stature at the Bernabeu inevitably shape the squad's dynamics. The Daily Mail's story on Trent Alexander-Arnold's struggles highlights this. The piece notes that, despite public backing from Mbappé in the past, the English defender has found himself out of favor under Mourinho. In a squad now built around Galacticos like Mbappé, other high-profile signings can find minutes hard to earn. Alexander-Arnold is currently Madrid's third-choice right-back, a stark contrast to the Ballon d'Or discussions that once surrounded him. This shows the relentless competition for places at a club where Mbappé sets the standard.

  • Ballon d'Or Hope: Real Madrid is optimistic Kylian Mbappé can win the award at the London gala on October 30.
  • El Clasico Stage: Mbappé faces direct rival Lamine Yamal when Real Madrid meets Barcelona on Sunday.
  • Gridiron Tryout: Mbappé trained as a wide receiver with NFL star Bijan Robinson, catching passes in full pads.
  • Squad Standard: Mbappé's elite status exemplifies the level required to star at Real Madrid, affecting squad roles.
