Khabib Nurmagomedov’s championship blueprint is being cited as the model for elite wrestlers in MMA today. As his family and team continue to make news, the retired legend’s influence remains a powerful force in the sport.

Chael Sonnen recently pointed to Khabib Nurmagomedov as the perfect example of a fighter who understood his core assignment. Analyzing Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson's recent loss at UFC 331, Sonnen explained the trap of trying to become well-rounded too fast. He said Khabib never fell for that.

"Khabib understood the assignment, which is to bring my best skill and overwhelm you with it," Sonnen stated. Sonnen argued that elite wrestlers sometimes feel pressured to shows new skills instead of dominating with what they already do best. Khabib’s career is a masterclass in avoiding that distraction. He would only turn to a plan B if his primary wrestling attack had completely failed.

Khabib’s first cousin, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, is scheduled to end a three-year hiatus from mixed martial arts. The 36-year-old will face David Martinez at PFL Dubai on November 14. This marks his first fight since being released by the UFC in February 2024 after a run of two wins and two losses in the promotion.

Abubakar was famously involved in the post-fight brawl following Khabib’s win over Conor McGregor in 2018, which resulted in a suspension and a fine. Before his PFL debut, he is also set to return to wrestling competition in Turkey on September 20. His comeback adds another chapter to the ongoing story of the Nurmagomedov team, which has grown into a major force in the sport.
