Jos Buttler's Hamstring Injury Sidelines England Captain

Jos Buttler's summer has ended prematurely after a hamstring injury ruled him out of England's series-deciding ODI against Sri Lanka at The Oval on Sunday. The captain's absence leaves a significant void in the side and casts a shadow over a personal milestone he achieved just moments before getting hurt.

The injury struck during the second ODI at Headingley on Thursday, September 25. Buttler was in full flow, having just become the first England batter to pass 10,000 combined runs in ODIs and T20Is. He was on 67 from 49 balls, having struck five sixes, and was pushing to chase down Sri Lanka's total of 321. Running back for a second run, he immediately grabbed the back of his left leg and required on-field treatment.

He retired hurt two balls later. Without their captain and premier finisher, England fell 16 runs short, allowing Sri Lanka to level the series at 1-1. The ECB stated Buttler would undergo further scans, with no firm return timeline given. This is a concern for a player with a history of recurring soft-tissue issues.

The England and Wales Cricket Board moved quickly to name a replacement. Surrey batter Dan Lawrence has been called into the squad for the first time in ODI cricket. Lawrence, who recently returned to the Test side with three fifties against Pakistan, offers a middle-order batting option. However, the wicketkeeping gloves are expected to pass to Jordan Cox.

Cox, who has been part of England's white-ball setup this summer, acknowledged the scale of the task. "They’re big shoes to fill, for sure," Cox told the Press Association. "Jos is probably the best ever white-ball cricketer we’ve produced." He added that someone's misfortune creates an opportunity, and he is ready to help England end their international summer on a high.

In that fateful innings at Headingley, Buttler entered rarefied air. His knock of 69 took his combined white-ball run tally for England to 10,062 runs across 367 matches. He is the first and only Englishman to cross the 10,000-run threshold in limited-overs internationals. The breakdown of his remarkable career numbers is shown below.

His achievement was mirrored by Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis, who scored 121 to pass 5,000 ODI runs in the same match. But for England, the celebration of Buttler's longevity and explosive output was instantly tempered by the sight of him leaving the field in pain.

• KEY TAKEAWAYS: Jos Buttler suffered a hamstring injury on September 25 and is out of the series decider. Dan Lawrence has been called up as his squad replacement. Buttler became the first England batter to score over 10,000 combined ODI and T20I runs. England lost the second ODI by 16 runs, squaring the series 1-1.

The focus now shifts to The Oval on Sunday for a winner-takes-all contest. England must regroup without their captain and most experienced white-ball campaigner, while Sri Lanka will sense a famous series victory is within their grasp. For Buttler, the priority is recovery, with the hope this setback is only a brief interruption in a record-setting career.
