Jos Buttler ruled out of Pakistan tour as England plan

2026-10-02 · Jos Buttler · Player Focus

Jos Buttler has been ruled out of England's white-ball tour of Pakistan next month, a major blow to the team's World Cup preparations. The 36-year-old wicketkeeper-batter sustained a hamstring injury during the second ODI against Sri Lanka last week, forcing him to miss the series decider and the upcoming tri-series.

Buttler hurt his left hamstring while batting at Headingley on September 25. He was on 66 during England's chase of 322 when he pulled up completing a second run. He briefly left the field but returned in visible discomfort, adding just three more runs before England fell 16 runs short. The injury kept him out of the third and deciding match at The Oval on September 27, a game England won by a massive 223 runs to clinch the series 2-1. Dan Lawrence was called up as his replacement for that final match.

Limited-overs coach Brendon McCullum confirmed Buttler will not travel to Pakistan. "We know he's an incredible athlete, we know he's supremely fit and an ultra professional, so he'll do everything he can to get back as soon as possible," McCullum said. His absence creates an opportunity for others, with young wicketkeeper Jordan Cox a likely beneficiary. Cox, who has played just three ODIs, impressed in the recent Test series against Pakistan, scoring 202 runs at an average of 50.50. There is no confirmed timeline for Buttler's return, leaving his participation in the subsequent tour to Australia in November uncertain.

In a recent podcast appearance, Buttler suggested a silver lining from the summer's coaching reshuffle. He believes Brendon McCullum's removal as Test coach in July, replaced by Stephen Fleming, has allowed the New Zealander to concentrate fully on the 2027 World Cup in southern Africa. "He's only got one focus now and that is the white ball," Buttler said. "Now he can focus solely on white-ball cricket." McCullum's limited-overs side ended the summer with a strong record of 11 wins and two defeats, including ODI series victories over India and Sri Lanka.

  • Jos Buttler's injury is a significant short-term setback, removing England's most accomplished white-ball player for a key preparatory tour.
  • Brendon McCullum now has undivided attention on the 2027 World Cup campaign following his exit from the Test setup.
  • The situation forces England to test their squad depth, with players like Jordan Cox and Dan Lawrence getting opportunities earlier than planned.
  • The team's recent form in ODIs is positive, winning series against India and Sri Lanka this summer to build momentum.

England's next fixtures, which fans can find on our [fixtures](/fixtures) page, will be closely watched to see how they adapt without their star batsman. The management is treating this as a chance to stress-test their World Cup plans. "Between now and 14 months' time lots of things will go wrong," McCullum noted. "You almost have to catastrophise these things a little to prepare yourself." For Buttler, the immediate task is a race against time to regain fitness and return to the heart of the batting order.
