Islam Makhachev Fires Back at Jon Jones in GOAT Debate After UFC 330 Win

2026-10-08 · Islam Makhachev · Player Focus

Islam Makhachev is at the center of a heated debate about UFC greatness following his historic 17-fight winning streak. The welterweight champion's recent comments questioning the validity of Jon Jones's record have ignited a public feud, even as his own legendary status is being cemented by peers and potential challengers emerge.

A Champion's Record Sparks a Feud with a Legend

Makhachev set the new UFC record for consecutive victories at 17 wins with his unanimous decision over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in August 2026. This broke a mark Jon Jones believed was rightfully his. Jones had a 20-fight streak nullified due to a failed drug test in 2017. Makhachev recently called that streak "invalid," prompting a sharp response from the former two-division champion on social media. Jones told Makhachev to "keep chasing" and expressed hope to "see you up here one day," defending his own legacy while acknowledging the new champion's ascent.

This rivalry shows Makhachev's entry into the sport's highest echelon. Former UFC fighter Diana Belbita placed him firmly in the top three fighters of all time, alongside Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre. She highlighted the caliber of his competition across two weight classes. "The guy has proved himself so many times, fought some of the best," Belbita said, dismissing any notion he faced weak opposition. Makhachev, now 34, won the lightweight title in 2022 and captured the welterweight belt in 2025, successfully defending it for the first time this past August.

With his next title defense pending, the conversation has turned to possible opponents. Colby Covington gave Brazilian striker Carlos Prates no chance in a potential bout, calling it "the easiest fight of Makhachev's career." Covington predicted a takedown and submission victory for the champion, though he suggested Prates could improve his cardio by quitting smoking. Another name in the mix is the undefeated Michael Morales, though Covington questioned his experience against top-tier fighters. Meanwhile, Prates himself has publicly analyzed holes in Makhachev's game from the Garry fight.

A Warm Welcome from a Rising Prospect

Away from the immediate title picture, Makhachev received a welcome in Kyrgyzstan from undefeated UFC prospect Akbar Abdullaev. The 29-year-old Kyrgyz fighter, who earned a UFC contract with a 19-second knockout on the Contender Series, has a perfect 14-0 record with 13 finishes. His greeting highlights Makhachev's stature and reach across the fighting world, connecting champions with the next generation of talent from their shared region.

  • Historic Streak: Islam Makhachev's win at UFC 330 in August 2026 set the new UFC record at 17 consecutive victories.
  • GOAT Status: Former fighter Diana Belbita ranks Makhachev in the all-time top three with Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre.
  • Public Spat: Makhachev's comment that Jones's record is "invalid" led to a direct social media rebuttal from Jones himself.
  • Next in Line: Colby Covington dismissed Carlos Prates as a threat, while Michael Morales is also mentioned as a possible welterweight challenger.
