Ian Machado Garry Accepts UFC Main Event Date Amid Title Picture Turmoil
Ian Machado Garry says he has accepted a date for a UFC main event against undefeated contender Michael Morales, but the fight is now mired in a public dispute over who is making excuses.
Garry, coming off a unanimous decision loss to welterweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 330 on August 15, claims the promotion sent him the offer and he immediately agreed. He then took to Instagram to challenge Morales directly, accusing the Ecuadorian of sending mixed messages. "I've said YES. The date is locked in. Main event and you're making excuses already," Garry wrote. He added that while Morales talks publicly about wanting a title shot, privately he's receiving a different story. Morales, who is 19-0 and ranked No. 3, hasn't fought since a first-round stoppage of Sean Brady in November 2025. He has instead called for a direct title fight with Makhachev or a bout with fellow top contender Shavkat Rakhmonov.
Garry's Unshaken Confidence After Title Defeat
Despite the loss to Makhachev, Garry's self-belief remains absolute. In a recent interview, he stated plainly, "If I fight him right now, I beat him." The five-round battle at UFC 330 was a grueling affair that left the champion visibly marked up. Garry pushed the pace but was dropped in the second round. His performance drew criticism from UFC CEO Dana White, who questioned the Irish fighter's "killer instinct" due to friendly exchanges like high-fives and a near-hug between rounds. White has since doubled down on that critique, suggesting Garry's respectful demeanor may have cost him the belt.
The Complex Welterweight Chessboard
The proposed Garry-Morales bout exists within a stalled title picture. Champion Islam Makhachev is expected to face Carlos Prates in his next defense, tentatively slated for 2027. This has left other top contenders in a holding pattern. Shavkat Rakhmonov, who defeated Garry at UFC 310 nearly two years ago, is also targeting a return from a long injury layoff. He recently hinted at a fight with Morales, posting "19-0 vs. 19-0" on social media. This creates a three-way standoff between Garry, Morales, and Rakhmonov, with only one logical pairing able to happen next.
Garry Backs Former Foe Against the Champion
Interestingly, Garry sees a path to victory for Carlos Prates against Makhachev. The two fought in April 2025, with Garry fending off a late surge from the Brazilian to win. Based on that firsthand experience, Garry's "heart" tells him Prates has the tools to dethrone the champion. This adds another layer of intrigue to the division's future, as a Prates win would completely reset the championship queue.
