Hardik Pandya's injury setback delays India return amid fresh IPL trade interest

2026-10-07 · Hardik Pandya · Player Focus

Hardik Pandya's long-awaited return to cricket has been delayed again. The star all-rounder has been ruled out for at least three to four weeks with a stress-related shin injury, forcing his withdrawal from the India A squad to face Australia A.

Pandya's comeback hit a snag during a match simulation on September 19. He felt pain in his right calf, halting the session. Scans later confirmed a symptomatic right tibial bone stress response, linked to medial tibial stress syndrome. The BCCI medical team says there is no structural damage or established stress fracture, which is positive news.

His rehabilitation program, however, must restart. Pandya has been advised to undergo six to eight weeks of bisphosphonate therapy and vitamin D supplementation. He will begin with low-load exercises before gradually progressing to cricket-specific drills.

Despite this fresh setback, former India opener Aakash Chopra strongly backs Pandya for India's 2027 World Cup squad. "I have never seen him in bad form. Hardik Pandya is critical at No. 6," Chopra said. Pandya last played an ODI in the 2025 Champions Trophy final on March 9, 2025. His fitness will be monitored closely over the next year, with the selectors still viewing him as part of their plans for the tournament in southern Africa.

As his recovery continues, Pandya's name is circulating in IPL trade talks ahead of the 2027 season. Multiple franchises have reportedly contacted the Mumbai Indians about a potential move. While no deal is done, discussions have been held with the Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. One unnamed franchise is said to have shown particularly strong interest. Pandya's fitness will likely be a major factor in any trade decision, as he hasn't played since the 2026 IPL season ended on May 24.

Pandya's injury directly impacted the India A squad for the unofficial ODI series against Australia A, which began on October 6 in Puducherry. He was replaced by 23-year-old all-rounder Suryansh Shedge, who made his international debut against Ireland in June. The series serves as a missed opportunity for Pandya to prove his match readiness.
