Hardik Pandya ruled out of India A series with fresh tibial
Hardik Pandya has suffered another injury setback, a symptomatic right tibial bone stress response, which has ruled him out of the India A one-day series against Australia A. The all-rounder, who has not played an ODI since March 2025, has been prescribed two weeks of complete rest, casting doubt on his readiness for India's upcoming tour of New Zealand.
A recurring cycle of injury and rehabilitation
Pandya's latest issue surfaced just as he was nearing a return. He had been included conditionally in the India A squad for three matches in Puducherry starting October 6, with the series seen as a vital fitness test. He underwent a bowling assessment on September 17 but could not complete the full 10-over quota demanded by the BCCI's medical team and management. Pain resurfaced during another check on September 19, leading to scans and the diagnosis. While there is no fracture or structural damage, the injury requires rest and has effectively ended his hopes of playing competitive cricket before the New Zealand tour begins with T20Is on October 22.
The growing concern over his long-term reliability
This pattern of breaking down during rehabilitation, rather than in match play, is causing alarm. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan voiced this worry publicly. "It is unfortunate for any player that Hardik is getting injured without playing," Pathan said on Star Sports. He argued that repeated setbacks without game time erode the confidence of selectors and team management in a player's availability for major matches. Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has also labelled Pandya's fitness as "super inconsistent," questioning his ability to stay on the field. Their comments reflect a broader anxiety about India's dependence on a key all-rounder whose body keeps failing him.
The significant matches Pandya has already missed in 2026
This latest blow is part of a dismal year for Pandya on the international front. Beyond the India A series, he has already been absent from a string of important assignments for India in 2026. His last appearance was in the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad last March. Since then, he has missed white-ball series against Ireland, England, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and the Asian Games. He was also ruled out of the home ODI series against New Zealand at the start of the year, a series India lost 1-2. The BCCI had stated then that Pandya was not cleared to bowl 10 overs, with workload management cited ahead of the T20 World Cup.
All focus now shifts to his recovery over the prescribed two-week rest period. The typical timeline for a tibial bone stress injury is four to six weeks for full recovery. His availability for India's tour of New Zealand, which features ODIs from November 4, hangs in the balance. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has previously emphasised Pandya's unique value, telling JioStar, "Very few teams have a player like that who can bowl 10 overs for you, plus bat at number six or seven, plus with that impact." But that impact is currently theoretical. The team must now seriously consider contingency plans, as Pathan urged, for a future that may not reliably include a fully-fit Hardik Pandya.
