Gabriel Bortoleto criticizes boring Madrid GP as Audi driver

2026-09-24 · Gabriel Bortoleto · Player Focus

Gabriel Bortoleto did not hold back after a frustrating weekend at the new Madrid Grand Prix circuit. The Audi driver, who finished a disappointing 13th, bluntly described the race as "awful" and admitted he "almost fell asleep" during a processional event that offered little overtaking.

Bortoleto's criticism was sharp but specific. He spent much of the race waiting for a safety car that never came, trapped in a train of cars on a track he compared to a faster version of Monaco. "It's like Monaco, only faster, but just as boring as Monaco," the 21-year-old Brazilian said. He acknowledged the layout was cool and physically demanding, particularly the repetitive Turn 5 which gave drivers a headache over 50 laps. His core complaint was the lack of racing action, a sentiment echoed widely in the paddock after the inaugural event.

Away from the track, Bortoleto enjoys a unique perspective on one of Formula 1's most iconic figures. The young driver is managed by two-time world champion Fernando Alonso through his A14 Management agency. Bortoleto says the public persona is authentic. "He's very straightforward when he's in the cameras. He's like what he shows," Bortoleto explained on The Fast And The Curious podcast. He highlighted Alonso's sarcastic sense of humor as a defining trait, something he finds genuinely funny. This relationship has been a constant during Bortoleto's rise, which saw him debut with Sauber in 2025 before the team's formal transition to Audi this year.

Bortoleto is now in his second season in the championship, having secured a seat with the works Audi team. His debut season in 2025 was a learning year, and the 2026 campaign presents new challenges with a fully integrated Audi operation. The Madrid result was a setback, leaving him outside the points. His candid assessment of the circuit's flaws shows a driver focused on the quality of competition, not only his own finishing position. He joins other talents like Maximilian Guenther and Pepe Marti under the A14 Management umbrella.

  • Race Review: Bortoleto finished 13th at the Madrid GP and was highly critical of the track's lack of overtaking opportunities, comparing it to Monaco.
  • Manager Relationship: He described his manager, Fernando Alonso, as authentically straightforward and praised his sarcastic humor.
  • Career Path: The Brazilian is in his second F1 season, having debuted in 2025 and now driving for the factory Audi team.
