Ferran Torres Withdrawn From Spain Squad With Ankle Injury

2026-10-03 · Ferran Torres · Player Focus

Ferran Torres has been withdrawn from the Spain national team squad due to a left ankle injury, ruling the Paris Saint-Germain forward out of the world champion's upcoming Nations League fixtures. The Spanish Football Federation confirmed the 26 year old is experiencing persistent discomfort, prioritizing his recovery over the matches against Czechia and Croatia.

Injury Forces Spain Withdrawal

Torres initially played through the pain, starting and featuring for 55 minutes in Spain's 3-2 win over England on September 28. He was an unused substitute in the subsequent 4-1 victory against Croatia on October 1. The federation's medical staff, in constant contact with PSG, stated the symptoms persisted, leading to the joint decision for his withdrawal. "The decision was made to withdraw him from the squad to prioritize his recovery," the national team said.

A Bright Start at PSG Continues

This setback interrupts what has been an excellent beginning to Torres's career at his new club. He moved from FC Barcelona to PSG this summer for a fee of nearly €50 million. His impact was immediate, scoring a brace on his debut against Stade Rennais. He followed that with important goals against Stade Brestois and Olympique de Marseille, and netted a hat-trick against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League group stage.

Opportunity for a New Face

In Torres's absence, manager Luis de la Fuente has turned to Carlos Espí for a first senior call-up. The 21 year old Real Madrid forward, signed from Levante this summer, has scored two goals off the bench in his first four LaLiga appearances. He was already with the Spain under-21 squad, where he scored a record five goals in a 13-0 win over San Marino on October 3. His promotion fills the void left by the experienced Torres.

  • Ferran Torres is out of Spain's Nations League games due to persistent left ankle pain.
  • Carlos Espí earns his first senior Spain call-up as a replacement, following impressive form for club and country.
  • Torres has made a strong start at PSG, contributing key goals including a debut brace and a Champions League hat-trick.

The focus now shifts to Torres's recovery timeline with PSG, who will hope their significant summer investment is not sidelined for long. Spain, meanwhile, will test their depth as they continue their Nations League campaign without the striker who scored the winning goal in the World Cup final just months ago.
