Femke Bol targets 800m title after stunning switch

Femke Bol has stunned the athletics world by switching from 400m hurdles to target the 800m title this season.

Why is Femke Bol moving to the 800m?

The move aims to test her speed endurance over two laps.

What has her recent form shown?

In early season meets, Bol ran 1:58.4 in the 800m at a Belgian invitational, her fastest ever over the distance. Though off her hurdles peak, the times suggest she retains the aerobic base needed for 800m success.

Can she double up in major championships?

Bol has not ruled out competing in both events at the European Championships if qualifying standards allow. However, her federation prioritises the 800m as her main focus. No final decision has been made on doubling, with selection likely hinging on June trials.

How does this affect her squad role?

As a senior athlete, Bol’s shift inspires younger squad members to consider event flexibility.

• Femke Bol ran 1:58.4 in the 800m at a Belgian meet in July 2026
• Her best 400m hurdles time remains 51.45 from 2023
• She has won four Diamond League titles in the hurdles
• Bol aims to compete at the 2026 European Championships in Rome
