Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland debuted a dramatic new look, cutting off his iconic long blonde hair just before the 2026-27 Premier League opener against Bournemouth. The striker, recognisable for his trademark ponytail since 2021, revealed a sharp buzz cut, sending social media into a frenzy.

Why did Haaland cut his hair?

Haaland detailed the decision in a vlog on his YouTube channel. He said he had considered the change immediately after Norway's World Cup campaign this summer, where he scored seven goals as the nation reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by England, a performance that earned him a significant following in North America. "I was thinking about doing it straight after the World Cup, but I was so busy so I didn't do it. The season starts now so it's time to get a fresh start," Haaland explained. He also referenced conflicting advice, noting Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic told him never to cut his hair because his strength was in it. Haaland countered by drawing inspiration from his Scandinavian roots, saying, "You know what, the vikings, they go short as well," before finding a picture of a viking with a shaved head. His hairdresser joked it was "the most expensive haircut of all time."

How did his girlfriend react?

The haircut was a family affair. Haaland's girlfriend, Isabel Haugseng Johansen, was present for the transformation, captured in behind-the-scenes footage. Her immediate reaction was one of shock. "I think I will cry," she admitted before the cut began. Later on, Johansen also showed off a fresh haircut of her own on Instagram, posting a photo on August 23, 2026, with the caption "A lil refresh for fall x." Fans quickly connected the dots, dubbing it a "family haircut day" and turning the couple's matching refresh into a lighthearted social-media moment.
