Demi Vollering Eyes World Title and Prize Money in Montreal

2026-09-24 · Demi Vollering · Player Focus

Demi Vollering is poised for a major payday and a shot at the rainbow jersey as the 2026 UCI Road World Championships reach their climax in Montreal. The Dutch star is considered the woman to beat in both the elite road race and time trial, events that could net her €8,000 in prize money for a world title.

The elite women's road race on Saturday, September 26, is the main event for Vollering. She starts as a heavy favorite following a dominant season that included a second Tour de France Femmes victory. The 180.4km course in Montreal features a long opening loop followed by eight punishing laps of a central circuit, a test suited to her climbing strength. The men's race, where Remco Evenepoel is favored, follows on Sunday, September 27.

Vollering also contested the individual time trial earlier in the week, an event where she won a bronze medal in 2025. The UCI is offering equal prize money for men and women at these championships, a significant point of parity in the sport. Only the top three finishers in each event receive direct financial rewards.

The total prize pool for the Montreal World Championships is €124,250. A gold medal in either the road race or the time trial is worth €8,000. Silver medalists get €4,000, and bronze earns €2,000. These figures apply identically across men's and women's events. With the mixed relay and several time trials already completed, more than half the fund has been awarded, putting extra focus on the weekend's road races.

Gold€8,000
Silver€4,000
Bronze€2,000

Away from the race circuit, Vollering used her platform to join a growing critique of a viral nude advertisement featuring actress Sydney Sweeney for sportswear brand Novig. On Instagram, Vollering acknowledged the ad sparked debate but explained the frustration many female athletes feel. "For a long time, women have fought to be seen for what they can do, not for how they look," she wrote.

Vollering argued that sport teaches new perspectives on physical capability. "It's not: how do I look? But: what can I do? How strong can I become?" she said. The reigning Tour de France champion stressed that strength and femininity are not mutually exclusive. "You can ride your bike until there's nothing left in your legs and still enjoy putting on a beautiful dress," she added.

For viewers in the United States, live coverage of all World Championship events from September 20 to 27 is streaming on FloBikes and the FloSports app. The platform will also offer highlights, race replays, and post-race interviews. The event marks the first time the Road Worlds have been held in North America since 2015, offering a prime viewing window for American fans.

  • Demi Vollering is the standout favorite for the elite women's road race on September 26.
  • A world title in Montreal comes with a winner's prize of €8,000, with equal pay for men and women.
  • Vollering recently spoke out against the objectification of female athletes in media, emphasizing performance over appearance.

The championships conclude a week of racing that has already crowned time trial champions, including Remco Evenepoel and Marlen Reusser. All eyes now turn to Mount Royal to see if Vollering can convert her favorite's status into a second iconic jersey for her collection.
