What happened in Charlotte?

Organised by the Charlotte Chess Center Foundation-where Naroditsky served as resident grandmaster-the two-day rapid and blitz event paid tribute to the 29-year-old streamer and commentator known to fans as ‘Danya’. Rapid and blitz mirrored Naroditsky’s own strengths; he was one of the world’s top blitz specialists, especially in online play.

Sindarov, the 2026 Candidates winner, took first in both sections. After the blitz final he called Naroditsky “the kindest person in chess.”

Why the event matters for Daniel Naroditsky

The tournament doubled as a memorial. Naroditsky died in October 2025 at 29, and the formats-fast, dynamic, crowd-friendly-matched his style. The Charlotte Chess Center Foundation staged the event where he had been resident grandmaster, turning grief into celebration on the board.

That same week, FIDE’s Ethics and Disciplinary Commission published findings that former world champion Vladimir Kramnik had cyber-bullied Naroditsky and others. Kramnik received at least a one-year ban from FIDE events plus 12 months of unpaid service. He has said he will appeal.

In the rapid, Sindarov uncorked a sharp pawn sacrifice against an elite opponent. After 18…f5! 19 exf5, he intended 19…f4 20 Bxf4 Nxf4 21 Rxf4 Qxg5, seizing the initiative. White resigned on move 29 after 29…Bh6 won material and exposed a mating net.

The blitz delivered a David-vs-Goliath moment. Seventeen-year-old Ethan Sheehan, the lowest seed by far, reached the final and finished third. His upset over Nakamura featured a tactical twist: 23…Rg6? walked into 24 Qe3!, forcing Black to lose a rook and the game on time with a hopeless position.

What comes next?

The Charlotte Chess Center Foundation plans to make the Naroditsky Memorial an annual fixture. Organisers also aim to grow youth participation after Sheehan’s breakthrough run.

Meanwhile, the fallout from the FIDE ethics ruling continues. Kramnik’s appeal will test whether chess’s top body can enforce its own verdicts swiftly.
