Austin Cindric Secures Team Penske Future for 2027 After Talladega Heartbreak

2026-10-29 · Austin Cindric · Player Focus

Austin Cindric's place in the Team Penske NASCAR Cup Series lineup is secure for the 2027 season, a major organizational decision that solidifies his future with the powerhouse team. This commitment comes on the heels of a frustrating but competitive performance at Talladega Superspeedway, where a late crash spoiled a promising day for the No. 2 Ford team.

Team Penske locks in Cindric for 2027

Team Penske has made a significant call on its driver roster, confirming that Cindric will continue to pilot the No. 2 Ford Mustang Dark Horse next year. The 28-year-old driver, who won the Daytona 500 in 2022, has been a fixture in the Penske camp since his early career development. This move ends any speculation about his seat and shows the team's faith in his continued growth within the Cup Series.

A strong Talladega run ends in a wreck

Cindric demonstrated serious speed at the YellaWood 500 on October 25, 2026, only to see a potential top finish vanish in the final laps. Starting 28th, he charged into the top 10 by Lap 2 and consistently ran near the front. He earned one stage point with a 10th-place finish in Stage 1 and collected seven more by finishing fourth in Stage 2. With just five laps remaining, however, he was caught in a multi-car incident that relegated his No. 2 Menards/Knauf Ford to a 27th-place finish. The result was a harsh end to a day where the car handled well, with Cindric only noting a slight tendency to get loose over a long run.

Cindric credits diverse racing background for his edge

Cindric believes his path to NASCAR, filled with varied racing experiences, has been a key to his success. Before focusing on stock cars, he competed in IMSA sports cars, the Bathurst 12 Hour, USF2000 open-wheel cars, and even Global RallyCross, where he earned an X Games bronze medal. "The more things you get to drive, the more you realize a race car is just a race car," Cindric told Autoweek. He argues this background builds mental flexibility, helping him adapt quickly and understand what makes any car fast. He resisted early pressure to specialize, a choice he feels is now more common for young drivers.

Preparing for a special Veterans Day event at Daytona

Looking ahead, Cindric is set to participate in Ford's Proud to Honor Veterans Day Classic exhibition at Daytona International Speedway on November 11. The event, which features drivers representing military branches, is something he sees as a fun competition and an important tribute. "To be able to do that and show that off... Is ultimately what it’s all about," Cindric said. True to his competitive nature, his first thoughts were practical: wondering about the car he'll drive, if he fits, and how to make it go fast against his rivals.

  • Seat secured: Austin Cindric will drive the No. 2 Ford for Team Penske in the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season.
  • Talladega result: A late crash on October 25 dropped him to a 27th-place finish after running in the top five for much of the race.
  • Racing resume: Cindric credits his experience in sports cars, rallycross, and open-wheel racing for making him a more adaptable NASCAR driver.
  • Next race: He will compete in Ford's Veterans Day Classic exhibition at Daytona on November 11, 2026.
