Aaron Judge's Olympic Dreams Caught in MLB's Contract Dispute

Aaron Judge and other MLB superstars could miss the 2028 Olympics due to a growing dispute between players and owners over participation rules. The conflict centers on mandatory involvement and potential penalties for declining, with Judge among those eager to compete.

What’s the dispute about?

The MLB owners support Olympic participation but want strict rules. They propose forcing top players like Judge to join the U.S. team or face a month-long suspension without pay. The MLB Players Association opposes this, arguing players shouldn’t lose income for representing their country.

Ian Penny, a special advisor at the MLBPA, called the proposals 'particularly modest and imminently reasonable,' emphasizing fair treatment for players. The union wants compensation for athletes, given the financial benefits the Olympics bring to non-player stakeholders.

Why does this matter for Aaron Judge?

Judge, who has played for the U.S. in the World Baseball Classic, has expressed strong interest in the Olympics. The 2028 Games in Los Angeles would be a historic moment for MLB, with Dodger Stadium hosting the tournament. But if the current rules stand, Judge and others could face penalties for prioritizing their MLB teams.

The dispute also affects logistics. The LA28 committee has offered limited hotel rooms, with MLB reserving 200-100 for its players and 100 for Japan’s national team. Some players, like Judge, may stay in the Olympic Village, while families would use the reserved hotels.

What’s next for the negotiations?

The MLB season would pause for 11 days to accommodate the Olympics and the All-Star Game. The U.S. has already qualified as the host nation, with the Dominican Republic and Venezuela also securing spots. But the final agreement on player participation remains unresolved.

Judge and his teammates hope for a fair deal. The MLBPA’s stance suggests they won’t back down, setting the stage for further negotiations. For now, Judge’s Olympic dreams-and those of other MLB stars-hang in the balance.
