Yordan Alvarez Earns All-Star Nod During MVP-Caliber 2026 Season

Yordan Alvarez was voted by fans as the American League starting designated hitter for the 2026 All-Star Game in Philadelphia, capping a first half that has him on pace to shatter the Astros' single-season home run record.

The 29-year-old slugger crushed his 30th homer of the season on Friday against the Rangers, reaching that mark in just 96 games: the second-fastest in franchise history behind only Jeff Bagwell's 1999 pace.

How did Yordan Alvarez earn his All-Star nod?

Alvarez's production has been relentless. He hit a walk-off two-run homer on July 4 against the Rays: his second homer of that game and the 199th of his career: then found his five-year-old son Jordan in the seats behind home plate for a hug.

Two days later, he launched career homer No. 200. The Astros have played 96 games. Alvarez has 30 homers. Only Bagwell (91 games in 1999) got to 30 faster in an Astros uniform.

What makes this season different for Yordan Alvarez?

Teammates and coaches describe a softer side to the fearsome hitter. Astros manager Joe Espada called him a "soft-spoken guy" who is "feared on the field, but there's a soft side to him in a good way."

Former teammate Mauricio Dubón, one of Alvarez's closest friends, said: "I don't think he knows he's Yordan Alvarez. That's the funny thing about it."

Alvarez spends his off days on his boat in southeast Texas or taking RV road trips with his wife Monica, daughter Mia, and son Jordan. They've driven to upstate New York and the Florida Keys.

What comes next for Yordan Alvarez?

The All-Star Game is July 14 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. Alvarez will start at DH for the American League. His family: including Jordan, who loves coming to the ballpark: will be there.

Alvarez is the frontrunner for AL MVP. He's on pace to break the Astros' single-season home run record. The second half starts after the break.

For now, he's just a dad who happens to hit 450-foot homers. "He's a great dad, a great person, very even-keeled," Dubón said. "You get to see him in the pool, hanging out with his kids and how lovable he is."
