Will Ospreay reveals why he rejected WWE for NJPW full-time deal

Will Ospreay has revealed why he walked away from WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic in 2016 to sign a full-time contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling. Speaking on the Marking Out podcast, Ospreay said he respected WWE’s offer but chased his dream of becoming a full-time NJPW star instead.

What happened next for Will Ospreay at NJPW?

Ospreay asked NJPW for more than a spot in the Best of the Super Juniors tournament. The company responded with a full-time contract. He spent eight years in New Japan, rising from a tournament competitor to one of wrestling’s top performers. His run culminated in winning the IWGP Heavyweight Title during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

Ospreay called his 2019 to 2024 run his best years in wrestling. He admitted the COVID-era tours left him isolated. “I was firing on all cylinders,” he said. “My body didn’t hurt. I was on it. And it was in f***ing silence, and it tore me apart.” He later described those years as the most difficult stretch of his career.

Will Ospreay’s dream title win turned bittersweet

Ospreay recalled winning the IWGP Heavyweight Title during COVID as a hollow victory. Gedo told him he’d win the New Japan Cup and then the title. “I remember crying in the boys’ toilets,” Ospreay said. “This is my dream.” After the three-count, he expected celebration. Instead, he was sent home early. “I sent my dad a photo of the belt,” he said. “I just thought, man, this isn’t what I wanted at all.”

After eight years in New Japan, Ospreay left for AEW. His NJPW run built his global reputation. He now competes in All Elite Wrestling, where he continues to chase new challenges. His podcast appearance highlighted the contrast between his NJPW peak and the sacrifices he made along the way.
