Sandro Tonali reacts to his record Tottenham Hotspur transfer deal

Sandro Tonali has spoken for the first time since Tottenham Hotspur finalized his record transfer deal on Tuesday.

The Italy international midfielder confirmed his move to north London in a brief statement posted on his official channels.

What happened?

Tottenham Hotspur announced the completion of Tonali’s transfer on 16 July 2026, ending weeks of speculation over his future. The club activated a clause in his Brescia contract, triggering a reported £60 million release fee. Tonali, 23, will join Spurs on a six-year contract starting from 1 August 2026.

In his first public comment on the deal, Tonali said he was “honored and excited” to join a club with “big ambitions.” He thanked Brescia for his development and praised Spurs’ project under their new ownership.

Why it matters for Sandro Tonali

Tonali’s arrival at Spurs marks a major step in his career. After winning the Serie B title with Brescia in 2022-23, he became a sought-after midfield talent in Europe. His transfer fee-reported as the highest ever for an Italian player under 25-reflects Spurs’ push to rebuild with young, elite talent.

The deal also ends months of uncertainty. Tonali was linked with multiple Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, before Spurs emerged as favorites. His move aligns with Spurs’ strategy to blend youth with Premier League experience.

What comes next?

Tonali will report to Spurs’ pre-season camp in Austria on 25 July 2026. He’ll undergo medicals and meet new teammates before the squad returns to London for training. His first competitive action could come in Spurs’ Premier League opener on 15 August 2026 against Brentford.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has praised Tonali’s “energy, technical quality, and leadership.” The Australian coach sees him as a key piece in his midfield rotation alongside Yves Bissouma and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

What Tonali said in his first comment

In a video posted on Instagram, Tonali addressed Spurs fans directly. “I can’t wait to wear the shirt and fight for this club,” he said. “I know the Premier League is tough, but I’m ready to grow and help Spurs compete at the top.”

He also thanked his agent, family, and Brescia fans for their support during the transfer saga. Tonali’s move caps a rapid rise from Brescia’s youth ranks to a club record deal in under five years.
