Ryan Murphy Wins Golden Goggle Awards, Talks Future Plans

Ryan Murphy took home three Golden Goggle awards in November, including Male Athlete of the Year and Male Race of the Year.

What happened?

Murphy won these awards at a ceremony in New York City, which he found to be a great event to reflect on his hard training and the great moments he had during the summer.

He mentioned that growing up, one of the reasons he started swimming was because of the Olympic dream and watching people win gold medals for their country.

Influences and role models

Murphy listed seven-time Olympic medalist Aaron Peirsol as an influence on his growing up, especially in the men's backstroke, and praised him as an awesome guy with an interesting perspective.

He also thanked his family for their love and support, especially his parents and siblings, and mentioned fellow swimmer Chase Kalisz as a great friend.

USA Swimming Foundation

Murphy serves as an ambassador for the USA Swimming Foundation, which he believes in and is passionate about, particularly regarding water safety and getting kids into activities.

He noted that drowning is the No. 1 cause of accidental death for children under 12 years old and expressed his happiness with the foundation's trajectory.

Future plans and coaching

Murphy complimented fellow five-time Olympic medalist Josh Davis for doing a great job with his Breakout Swim Clinic and described his coach, Dave Durden, as the best coach in the country.

He also extolled U.S. swimming coaches Teri McKeever and David Marsh for being legends in the sport, with Teri being a trailblazer for everything she accomplished.

Murphy looks forward to helping the USA Swimming Foundation grow and continuing to teach people how to swim, emphasizing the importance of sports as a great teacher in his life.
