Rohit Sharma lands Padma Shri in 2026 honours list

Rohit Sharma was named among eight sportspersons awarded the Padma Shri on 14 July 2026. The honour caps a career that includes five ICC trophies and 40-plus international centuries.

What the Padma Shri means for Rohit Sharma

The Padma Shri is India’s fourth-highest civilian award. Rohit Sharma becomes the 12th cricketer to receive it since the category was introduced in 1954. Past cricket recipients include Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev.

The citation credits Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and batting across formats. It highlights his 2019 ICC Men’s World Cup final appearance and 2023 ODI World Cup title. His white-ball records-30 ODI centuries and a T20I double-century-are also noted.

Who else made the 2026 list

Eight sportspersons were named in total. They span archery, athletics, para-sports and wrestling. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the list after a month-long selection process led by the Padma Awards Committee.

What comes next for Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma remains India’s white-ball captain. He is due to lead the team in the 2026 T20 World Cup in Australia. The squad announcement is expected within two weeks.

The award ceremony will be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on 15 August 2026. Rohit Sharma will receive his medal from the President of India.
