Robert Whittaker Walks into Light Heavyweight Debut with Confidence

Robert Whittaker is walking into his light heavyweight debut against Nikita Krylov at UFC 329 with confidence. The former middleweight champion has struggled with weight cuts in the past but is now in a more natural weight range.

What happened?

Whittaker (26-9 MMA, 17-7 UFC) makes his 205-pound debut against Krylov (31-11 MMA, 12-9 UFC) on July 11 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (Paramount+). Despite not having the stature for light heavyweight, Whittaker has struggled in his past few cuts down to 185 pounds, where he most recently lost a split decision to Reinier de Ridder in the UFC on ABC 9 main event in July 2025.

Why it matters for Robert Whittaker

Whittaker, 35, has been open about his struggles with weight cuts in the past. He told Demetrious Johnson that he's been doing the right things to prepare for his light heavyweight debut. "I've done all the right things," Whittaker said. "I'm not going to light heavyweight as an out of shape middleweight. I'm not just a middleweight who can eat more now. I've been doing the right things, I've leaned up, I'm in a much more natural weight range for myself."

What comes next?

Whittaker is expecting to find success in his third division under the UFC banner. He's been training hard and is feeling his best ever. "This is the best I think I've felt for my career holistically," Whittaker said. "This is a much more natural weight for me. The last couple of camps I just have not enjoyed because of the amount of sacrifice and skipping of food that I've had to do."

Whittaker's walk-around weight hasn't drastically changed. He's just now built himself into the light heavyweight frame. He's walking around 220-225 pounds pretty lean because he's just heavy. Whittaker is looking forward to enjoying the process of training and competing in his new weight class.

Whittaker's light heavyweight debut against Nikita Krylov is set to take place on July 11 at UFC 329. The event will be held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be broadcast on Paramount+.
