Ravichandran Ashwin urges India to back Kuldeep Yadav for 2027 World Cup

Ravichandran Ashwin has taken aim at India’s team management over their treatment of Kuldeep Yadav ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

On 15 July 2026, the former India off-spinner used his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat to demand more backing for the left-arm wrist spinner, calling him a match-winner who can bowl in any phase of the game.

What did Ashwin say?

Ashwin argued that finger-spinning all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar do not fit India’s 2027 World Cup plans. He said Kuldeep’s spot should be locked in, with Harshit Rana stepping in as the third seamer when fit.

“Whenever Kuldeep’s place is made, and Harshit Rana is fit and firing, Harshit Rana becomes the third seamer. Then it opens up a slot for Kuldeep,” Ashwin said.

He also stressed the need to build Kuldeep’s confidence, warning that India’s management has not backed him enough.

Why does it matter for Ravichandran Ashwin?

Ashwin’s comments come as he continues to weigh in on India’s selection debates. The off-spinner has long been vocal about team balance and the role of spinners in white-ball cricket.

He praised Shubman Gill’s recent batting and captaincy, noting Gill’s 80 against England on 15 July 2026 as proof of his growing influence.

“A player’s confidence comes from where? He makes runs and finds himself in good places,” Ashwin said.

What about Shivam Dube?

Ashwin poured cold water on the idea of Shivam Dube as a primary all-rounder for ODIs. He called Hardik Pandya his first choice, with Nitish Kumar Reddy as the backup.

“If Shivam Dube is a serious contender for the 2027 ODI World Cup, I think we are in a little bit of a spot of bother,” Ashwin said.

He did, however, praise Dube’s six-over spell against England, calling it a smart use of his skills.

What happens next?

With injuries to Rana, Reddy and Pandya, India’s all-rounder hunt remains fluid. Ashwin’s push for Kuldeep could force a rethink in the lead-up to the World Cup.

The debate over spinners and all-rounders is set to intensify as India finalize their squad for the marquee event.
