Primoz Roglic Wins Vuelta Stage 17 Ahead of Jonas Vingegaard

Primoz Roglic won Vuelta stage 17 on a gruelling 124.5 kilometre ride through Asturias, finishing at the Angliru. He crossed the finish line with Jonas Vingegaard on his back wheel.

What happened?

The Jumbo Visma team dominated the final part of the climb. Remco Evenepoel led early on but ran out of steam.

Roglic and Vingegaard battled for the stage win. Kuss, the overall leader, saw his lead cut to just eight seconds.

Reaction

Kuss said he never expected to be in this position. He hopes to hold on to the overall lead.

What comes next?

Thursday's stage 18 is another mountain stage, a 179 km ride from Pola de Allende to La Cruz de Linares. Roglic is now one minute eight seconds off the lead in third place.

Roglic was hopeful that Kuss could hold on but is still going all out for victory himself. He wishes Kuss wins but will do his best to take the top spot.

Vingegaard retained his Tour de France title this year. He hopes Kuss holds on for the win, saying he would love to see him win this Vuelta a Espana.

The final part of the stage saw the Jumbo Visma team do battle with Team Bahrain Victorious. Three riders from each team led the way into the final four kilometres.

Roglic came in first, his second stage win of this Vuelta. Vingegaard came in close behind, with Kuss 19 seconds down.

Kuss held a 29-second advantage over Vingegaard heading into the stage. But his overall lead was cut to just eight seconds by his Danish teammate.

Roglic won this year's Giro d'Italia. He is now focused on taking the top spot in the Vuelta.
