Paul Skenes Ineligible for MLB All-Star Game: Pirates Ace Misses Out

Paul Skenes, the Pittsburgh Pirates' rookie sensation, will not take the mound in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game. The 21-year-old right-hander is ineligible despite his breakout season, as MLB rules require players to be on a roster by June 1 to qualify for the midseason classic.

Why is Paul Skenes ineligible?

Skenes made his MLB debut on May 11, 2024, after dominating at Triple-A Indianapolis. The June 1 cutoff means he missed the eligibility window, even though he's posted a 2.17 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 75 innings. Pirates manager Derek Shelton called the rule 'unfortunate' but acknowledged the league's longstanding policy.

How has Skenes performed this season?

Since his debut, Skenes has lived up to the hype as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 draft. His fastball averages 99 mph, and his slider has baffled hitters. Opponents are batting just .182 against him, and he's allowed only 17 earned runs in 13 starts. The Pirates are 8-5 in games he's started.

What's next for Skenes?

While he won't pitch in the All-Star Game, Skenes remains a top candidate for National League Rookie of the Year. He's scheduled to start for Pittsburgh on July 19 against the Chicago Cubs. The Pirates hope his strong first half carries into the second, as they push for a playoff spot in the NL Central.
