Patrick Mahomes Reveals How Tom Brady and Zach Ertz Helped His Rehab

2026-07-16 · Patrick Mahomes · Player Focus

Patrick Mahomes leaned on NFL legends Tom Brady and Zach Ertz during his rehab from a season-ending knee injury in 2025. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback sought advice from Brady, whose career path mirrored his own, and engaged in a competitive recovery with Ertz.

What Happened During Mahomes' Rehab?

Mahomes tore multiple knee ligaments in his ninth NFL season, just like Brady did in his ninth year. The Chiefs star texted Brady for advice on how the injury would impact his quarterback movements. Brady shared insights on adjusting his process to prolong his career, which Mahomes plans to apply.

Mahomes also connected with former teammate Tyrann Mathieu, who suffered the same injury. But the most impactful mentor was tight end Zach Ertz, who tore his ACL just seven days before Mahomes. The two exchanged recovery videos and pushed each other competitively.

Why Brady and Ertz Were Key to Mahomes' Recovery

Brady’s experience was invaluable. He played at an elite level after reconstructive knee surgery, even reaching six more Super Bowls. Mahomes hopes to follow a similar path, aiming for a career as long as Brady’s 23-year run.

Ertz, who played under Mahomes’ college coach Kliff Kingsbury, provided a unique perspective. Their friendly competition kept Mahomes motivated. The tight end’s Super Bowl-winning catch against Brady’s Patriots added another layer to their bond.

What Comes Next for Mahomes?

Mahomes has shown promising progress. He participated in 7-on-7 drills during offseason practices, though he’s still limited in team portions. The Chiefs rewarded his recovery with an eight-year, $504.75 million contract extension, the first half-billion-dollar deal in NFL history.

The lowest point of his rehab was around Christmas 2025, when he couldn’t play with his kids. But by January 4, 2026, he was back on his feet. Now, he’s focused on returning to peak form and leading the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl.
