Greg Rusedski warns Novak Djokovic’s last Slam chance may be lost

Novak Djokovic’s hopes of claiming a record 25th Grand Slam title have vanished after his straight-sets quarter-final loss at Wimbledon on 10 July 2026.

What happened?

Former British No 1 Greg Rusedski told The Telegraph that Djokovic’s window to break Rafael Nadal’s men’s major record is now closed. The 39-year-old Serb was beaten 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 by a rising qualifier on Centre Court on Tuesday. Rusedski argued the defeat ended Djokovic’s last realistic chance to lift another Slam.

Why it matters for Novak Djokovic

At 39, Djokovic is the oldest active man in the ATP top 50. His exit leaves him one major behind Nadal’s 22 and two behind Margaret Court’s all-time mark of 24. Rusedski said the loss exposed the gap between Djokovic’s current level and the relentless standards he once set. The Serb now trails Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in the race to finish 2026 as year-end No 1.

What comes next?

Djokovic is scheduled to play the Olympics in Paris starting 27 July 2026. A medal would keep his Olympic hopes alive, but Rusedski doubts another Slam is realistic. The Serb’s next major is the 2027 Australian Open, by which time he will be 40. Rusedski added that Djokovic’s body can no longer recover between two-week events the way it once did.

Djokovic has not spoken publicly since the Wimbledon defeat. His camp has only confirmed he will review his schedule before deciding on the Olympic grass swing.
