Nick Diaz Returns to Gym, Sparks Hope for 2026 Comeback

Nick Diaz has officially returned to the gym after a series of health scares and a year-long sobriety milestone.

What happened?

Diaz's longtime teammate and friend Jake Shields shared footage of the 42-year-old engaging in light “play” sparring and grappling.

Diaz has also recently reached a sobriety milestone and completed a stint in rehab.

Why it matters for Nick Diaz

This reflects the positive comments that Shields gave last year, stating that Diaz is doing a lot better.

Shields said: “A little play sparring with Nick Diaz this morning. Nick was my top sparring partner for over 15 years, so it’s good to get back together and train.”

What comes next?

Diaz's fighting future is uncertain, as he has not won a professional fight since 2011, and his last appearance was a TKO loss to Robbie Lawler in 2021.

Former BMF champion Jorge Masvidal recently expressed interest in a fight against Diaz later this year.

Masvidal said: “If Nick looks good and does his job, why not me and Nick? I’d love to fight Nick. It’s a classic fight.”

Instead of risking his health in the cage, Nick’s return to the gym could be viewed as an opportunity to transition into a coaching role.

By staying in the gym as a mentor, he can give back without the neurological risks of professional fighting.

Nick Diaz has nothing left to prove, and his greatest victory in 2026 shouldn’t be over an opponent in the cage, but rather the continued mastery of his own life and health.
