Naomi Osaka reveals schedule shake-up after Wimbledon struggle

Naomi Osaka will alter her pre-Slam preparation after a draining Wimbledon debut on 30 June. The two-time US Open champion exited in the first round, blaming fatigue for her lack of intensity.

What happened at Wimbledon 2025?

Osaka’s Wimbledon campaign ended in the opening round on 30 June. She lost to a qualifier in straight sets, citing a dip in energy as the core issue. The match marked her earliest exit at the All England Club since 2017.

And the setback comes after Osaka skipped Roland-Garros in May. She had planned to play both clay and grass warm-ups, but skipped the French Open entirely. Her last Slam before Wimbledon was the Australian Open in January, where she reached the third round.

Why it matters for Naomi Osaka

The loss exposes cracks in Osaka’s scheduling strategy. She’s long relied on limited warm-ups before Slams, but her body hasn’t responded as hoped. Her 2025 season now features just one Slam appearance before Wimbledon-a sharp drop from her usual slate.

Her ranking has slipped to No. 45 after a string of early exits this year. Osaka’s next major target is the US Open in late August, where she’ll need to defend semifinal points from 2024.

What comes next for Osaka?

Osaka will now tweak her pre-Slam calendar ahead of the US Open. She’s likely to add more tune-up events, though she hasn’t named specifics. Her team is reviewing her conditioning load after the Wimbledon exit.

And she’ll skip the grass-court swing’s traditional tune-ups like Eastbourne. Osaka’s next scheduled match is the Canadian Open in early August, a hard-court warm-up for the US Open.

Her coach, Sascha Bajin, hinted at deeper changes. “We’re looking at every detail,” Bajin said. “From training blocks to recovery, nothing’s off the table.”

Osaka’s 2025 season has been a grind. She’s played just 12 matches so far, with a 5-7 record. Her next shot at a deep run comes in New York, where she’ll chase her third US Open title.
